Coaching Philosophy

Over the years, I’ve noticed that a lot of the training options, advice, and workouts assume a continuous running approach, which can feel very intimidating and unattainable to newer or slower runners! Since I personally have found a huge amount of success using the run/walk method, I am here to help runners develop and execute run/walk training plans. I believe in the run/walk method as a fantastic entry point for new runners, for those looking to increase their distance, or even for more experienced runners who are hoping to increase their speed, or avoid injury or burnout.

If you have had prior success with steady-state running, or have particular goals that align with steady-state running, I can still help you achieve your goals! I am here to work with you and find that strategy that works best for you, both physically and mentally.

What is the run/walk method? Simply put, the runner will run then walk, usually for set intervals, such as run for 2 minutes, walk for 30 seconds, repeat as necessary. Jeff Galloway popularized the strategy, and it has made running more accessible to many more people. I find this method to be much easier on my body and on my mental state. The variation helps keep me engaged, the built-in walk breaks help my body recover, and I find it easier to push myself through short, discrete periods of running.

Steady-state or continuous running is pretty much what is sounds like – the athlete runs for the entirety of the specified distance, with minimal to no walk breaks. Some people find the constant start-and-stop of the run/walk method difficult to maintain, and thus simply increasing the amount of time and distance in which they can run makes more sense for them.

Some runners will find that they prefer to run continuously for short distances, such as a 5k, but switch to run/walk when covering longer distances, such as a half marathon. Both strategies are great, when employed correctly! As your coach, I am here to help you achieve your goals, and part of that is to figure out which method works best for you!
